Hire Developers in Nepal from the USA

Nepal is a practical place to put development capacity, but it is not a timezone you can ignore. Kathmandu runs at UTC+5:45, which means a US working day falls almost entirely in the Nepali evening and night. Any provider who does not raise that in the first conversation has not thought about it.

This page sets out how the hours actually work for US clients, and how J&T Associates employs the developer so you need no entity in Nepal.

Covering a US working day from Kathmandu

Here is the arithmetic, with a standard 09:00–17:00 US business day converted to Kathmandu time:

  • US Eastern — 09:00–17:00 ET is 18:45–02:45 in Kathmandu
  • US Central — 09:00–17:00 CT is 19:45–03:45 in Kathmandu
  • US Mountain — 09:00–17:00 MT is 20:45–04:45 in Kathmandu
  • US Pacific — 09:00–17:00 PT is 21:45–05:45 in Kathmandu

There is no arrangement in which a normal Kathmandu day shift overlaps your working day. That is a factual constraint, not a sales problem, and it shapes the two patterns that actually work.

The two patterns US clients choose

1. A Kathmandu evening shift, aligned to your day

The developer works roughly 18:00–02:00 Kathmandu time, which is the US Eastern working day. You get live collaboration — stand-ups, code review, questions answered while you are working rather than the next morning. For East Coast clients this is close to a normal working relationship.

For Central, Mountain and Pacific clients, alignment means a later Kathmandu shift, moving toward a full night shift on the West Coast. That is workable, and people do it, but it is a real cost to the developer’s life and we price it as such rather than pretending it is free.

2. A Kathmandu day shift, delivery against your morning

The developer works normal Kathmandu hours and you review the output at the start of your day. There is no live overlap, but there is a genuine benefit: a full Nepali working day completes while your team is asleep, so work that was specified yesterday evening is finished when you open your laptop.

This pattern suits defined work — feature tickets, bug queues, test coverage, migrations — more than it suits design-by-conversation. If your process needs the developer in your meetings, choose the evening shift instead.

Many US engagements take a middle path: a day-shift developer for delivery volume, plus a few hours of scheduled overlap each day for handover and questions.

Do you need a US or Nepali entity?

No. This is the part that most often stops US companies from hiring in Nepal, and it does not have to.

J&T Associates becomes the developer’s legal employer in Nepal. We issue the Nepali employment contract, run salary and statutory contributions, administer leave and keep the employment records. You direct the developer’s work as you would any team member. You are not setting up a subsidiary, and you are not managing Nepali payroll or compliance.

If you have already found the developer yourself — through your network, or through our job board — the same structure applies. That is our Employer of Record service.

Why we are not a freelance marketplace

Most US companies searching for developers in Nepal land on Upwork, Twine or Truelancer first. Those platforms are good at what they do: connecting you to a contractor for a defined piece of work.

What they do not give you is an employment relationship. A contractor invoices you; if they take a better offer mid-project you have no continuity, and the compliance position is yours to manage. When we employ the developer, the employment relationship is the product. Replacement cover, payroll, statutory contributions and records are ours.

Our client list includes eight Nepali banks and organisations like Ncell, DHL and JICA — clients who need the employment side handled correctly, not just a name and a rate.

Questions US clients ask

Can a developer in Nepal work our hours permanently?

Yes, on an evening or night shift. It is a genuine cost, not a free option, and it should be a deliberate decision rather than a default.

How do you handle the language and communication gap?

Our staff work in English, which is the language of instruction, documentation and client communication across the teams we run. Technical English is generally strong in Nepal’s developer market.

Can we start with one developer, or do you set up whole teams?

Both. Many US engagements start with a single developer and grow from there. If you need a full team, we recruit the whole unit — engineers, plus a QA engineer or technical lead where the work needs one — and employ every member on Nepali contracts under our payroll.

Who owns the code?

That is settled in your client agreement with us, and we will set it out in writing before anyone starts. Take your own legal advice on anything specific to your jurisdiction.
